Tall guy
Watching a baseball game on TV last night, I was really struck by the thought that this is a game in which it would be a real advantage to be, say, 70 or 80 feet tall, so that you could just fall over from first base to steal second. And, because it would be unlikely that the pitcher could consistently get the ball over the plate at the height of your knees (and the umpire be able to see it), you would get lots of chances, since you would walk a lot. Walk to get on first, steal second, steal third, steal home. It would be an almost sure run every time you got to the plate. Finding a comfortable place in the dugout would be kind of rough, though, and you would pretty much need the whole grounds crew to help you take a shower. But what fielding position best suits an 80 foot-tall guy?

Tooth merry
I went to the offices of our family dentist, Donald Henagan, DDS, for a crown on Tuesday afternoon. Normally, one does not particularly look forward to a couple of hours in the dentist's chair, even at a well-run and friendly office like Dr. Henagan's, but I like the folks there so much that I figured it would be about as good as such a thing ever gets.
What I wasn't prepared for was how engaging it all turned out. Dr. Henagan, I learned, is one of the few dentists in our area to have employed CEREC CAD/CAM technology for producing crowns. After taking some photos with a little oral wand, he tap-tap-tapped on his keyboard for a while, and then when he had the tooth modeled on screen, sent the data downstream to the milling apparatus which produced the finished replacement tooth in less than 20 minutes.
I find that with many technological services, the real test of it is not when everything goes right, but how easy it is to recover from something that didn't go perfectly well. In this case, the machine worked right the first time, but when Dr. Henagan tapped the new crown into place to see the fit, he was a bit dissatisfied and changed his model a little to produce a new one - which itself emerged another 20 minutes later (try that with the dental lab).
The folks invited me to watch the machine at work and I was well captivated by its action, and as I wandered back to my dental chair, I had a brief conversation about the technology with Dr. Henagan. He has been using CEREC for about four or five years, and reports being really glad that he made the investment. He is now doing demos for other dentists.
The second crown fit like a charm (this new "tooth" is much better than the one it replaced), and even with that careful fitting and second round of manufacture, I was out of the office in less than two hours with an improved mouth. I chew better, look better, feel better and got to learn about something that was all new to me.
Here's a sentiment you might not see often expressed: I went to the dentist to get a crown this week, and I had a delightful time.
