Ruined dinner?
Once, when I was about nine years old, our family had just sat down to Thanksgiving dinner when I knocked over my drink glass. "I've ruined Thanksgiving," I blurted out, near tears, but my mother quickly informed me that it was just fine and that I had indeed not ruined Thanksgiving dinner.
I suppose I felt better for her reassurance; but, I must on the other hand confess to a retrospective suspicion that it had also been satisfying to think that I might have had the power, albeit innocently expressed, to ruin the dinner.

Thanksgiving Table
Our table set for Thanksgiving dinner, 2002. Susan's mother and brother are joining us, along with our friends Steve, Kay and Joel Marcel. Turkey. Dressing. Mashed potatoes. Cranberry sauce. The real action starts tomorrow with the leftovers: our favorite sandwich, turkey, cranberry sauce and melted mozzarella on the ciabatta buns I baked yesterday for this distinct purpose.

We watched the PBS broadcast of Skinwalkers last night. Susan reads all the Tony Hillerman books and I was relieved to hear her say that the film didn't at all convey the magic she finds in the books. On the other hand, we did watch it all the way through. It was just a bit flat, and rather dark visually, the result of what I found to be too many moody medicine man/spirituality scenes and not enough of the fascinating desert environment.

Heavenly Fizzle
So, the meteor shower wasn't the bang-up show it was hoped that it would be, because of the bright light of the moon...and that's if you had clear skies. We got up about 3:30 to find a soupy haze that was thickening into cloud cover. A few stars were barely visible, though, so we stuck it out for about half an hour, and were rewarded with one fairly dramatic meteor. Presumably, this was a really significant one to have been seen through the clouds and against the light of the moon. We were actually fairly well satisfied, as much by having sliced off the better part of a day to slip out to the state park cabins as anything.

I have been seeing the Internet the last couple of days through the beta of the Opera 7 browser, and I've also been using the new Mozilla 1.1. Each has tabbed windows, the ability to quash unwanted popup windows, and some other handy features. Opera has a "Hotlist" that can be easily toggled to the side of the screen with buttons to show the browser history, bookmarks, etc. I'm using the free version of Opera, which has an ad panel in the upper right corner. Since this is on my 19-inch monitor, I don't find the ads distracting, although I might if I installed it on a unit with a smaller monitor.
Part of Opera's strategy is to focus on mobile applications, where Microsoft doesn't have the lock that it has on desktops, and version 7 includes a toggle that lets you see how a page would look in a mobile device or cell phone screen. Very interesting!
I tried a bunch of the pages I have done and was pleased that they render well in Opera; I am in the process of re-coding some pages now so that they render as I wish them to in Mozilla, where the DOM works differently than in other browsers.
All in all, it's interesting to see these other browsers, and I imagine that I'll use Opera quite a bit. The vast majority of surfers, meanwhile, will for the forseeable future be dutifully using Internet Explorer.
