Turner Field
I had my first trip to Turner Field in Atlanta on Tuesday, June 24; Javy Lopez crushed two line-drive homers to left, and Andruw Jones sent a homer to deep center, 408 feet. I got the tickets on eBay, and they were great, about twenty rows behind first base. The Braves won over the Phillies, 5-3.

Lightning Strikes
I got home from lunch yesterday, and there had been a terrible storm with lightning strikes in our neighborhood. My phone line is out and with it DSL, so no internet connection (this is being posted on Susan's computer at work, which she kindly offered me as an emergency e-mail reading station).

The air-conditioner went out, too, although that has a temporary fix thanks to our clever repairman.

I had to spend the entire day up to now waiting for a telephone repair person who hadn't shown up by the time Susan came home and could take a shift. Oh, what fragile lives we lead.

On the other hand, I got to cook Susan some more of that tomato soup she likes, read a lot, watched a movie on cable and scattered parts of three different episodes of Twilight Zone. A day off!

Citations
In three plus years of Poor Clio, I've never used an outside service for posting entries. For a time I hand-coded everything in a design I created at least half with the idea that it couldn't be easily done with automated posting, and would render differently under different screen resolutions. But then I created the present design, which has a proprietary ColdFusion-driven web interface for me to post with, and allows me to send an individual item into one of four columns (the far left column is still all hand-coded). This weekend I added another feature to mimic one found on some automated (and some proprietary) weblogs: a citable link for each entry, leading to a page like this. The citation link is just to the right of the date and time stamp.

All this may serve to prove is that I'm too hard-headed to just take advantage of existing tools. Or too cheap. But I enjoy thinking through and executing the programming ideas, and as Susan says, I'm not hurting anybody.

So it's easy to have a citation now to an item in Poor Clio. I suspect that most of those made will be made by me, here.

Mine! Mine!
Susan and I went yesterday to see Finding Nemo, skewing the average age dramatically when we stepped into the darkened cinema. Though it was predictable and as cutesy as you would expect for the age of its audience, it was well made, imaginiative and enjoyable for us 50-plus folk. We especially liked the characterization of the seagulls, honking "Mine! Mine!" at the site of a possible bit of food.

And here's the kind of crowd a Pixar movie draws: About 20 minutes into the show, the projector ground to a halt and an usher came to the front of the house to announce that a Dodge Caravan parked outside the cinema had been left with a door open (you can picture the excited arrival of the vanload of tykes spilling toward the ticket line, etc.). About half a dozen little groups stirred in various parts of the theater, and there were several shouts to ask the color of the van. Burgundy. Still not settled... the usher had to say the license plate to single out the owner.

Drought and Nostalgia
Yesterday afternoon and last night it rained here, generously. We have once again slipped into a period of drought, and such a sustained rainfall is blessedly relieving.

My memory of growing up here in coastal Louisiana is of lush vegetation and afternoon rain showers even on the so-called dry days, and the drought years we have experienced in the last decade seem as much about lost youth as cracked earth; when we get rain like yesterday's, it's not only the quenching of my live oaks' desires that soothes me, it's likely also the comfort of their being some whiff of a return to the warm, wet womb.
