Bad stuff about...
What with all the news about Martha Stewart, greedy CEOs going down in flames, and occasional politician's-child drug troubles, I was thinking that it would be convenient to consolidate all the Bad Stuff About the Rich and Famous into one place. I checked, and the domain name schadenfreude.com is active. But there's not much there. Same for schadenfreude.net, at least where bad news about others is concerned. And schadenfreude.org is "under construction." Ah, we must wait. And hope.

Subway history
"When the subway opened on October 27, 1904, 150,000 people paid a nickel each to ride. New Yorkers embraced the IRTs clean (electric power produced no smoke and cinders), quick ride. It was the fastest city transportation system in the world; its four-track design enabled both express and local trains to run in each direction, and 'City Hall to Harlem in 15 minutes!' was the slogan."

Business class
It turns out that sleeping two nights in a row in a recliner (which I had to do after having had the Epley maneuver performed on me Monday to treat vertigo) was no treat. It's comforting to fall asleep in the recliner while, say, watching golf.
But two consecutive full nights of it is a drag... kind of like flying overnight to France or someplace two days in a row. At least I had leg room, so it was more like flying over twice in two days in business class. In 20 more minutes my 48 hours will be up and I will be allowed to actually lie down for the first time in two days. I didn't know how much I'd miss it!

My condition
Today I was diagnosed and treated for benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, a not particuarly uncommon condition. I have to keep my head stabilized for the next couple of days, including sleeping not in the bed but in a recliner... sleep comes to me in a recliner as a matter of course, actually, so I stand a chance of being a good patient!

Driskill Mountain
Susan and I conquered Driskill Mountain yesterday; having ascended to 535 feet of elevation, we are entitled to brag that we have bagged a "halfer." Driskill Mountain is the highest point in Louisiana, which leads me to wonder about other highest state points I have attained. I think Arkansas' Mount Magazine and New Hampshire's Mount Washington might round out the list where I'm concerned... unless I've cruised over some low-elevation state high point without realizing it. We got a bit of the way up Mt. Rainier once, but were still a few thousand feet away from the summit when we turned back... we skipped the hard part.
In any case, we attained the summit of Driskill Mountain with one day's climb, using no oxygen (!) We also used no ropes (!!!). We also wore only ordinary tennis shoes (!!!!) Susan even thought about going up barefoot (!!!!!).
On the ascent, we observed several small flying creatures we came to call "birds," as well as an assortment of flightless trees. Our Sherpas were very inobtrusive, but I am sorry to report they ate all the chocolate we had sent ahead to sustain us through the climb, and it was much missed.

Wedded bliss
When I see all the photos and other coverage of the same-sex couples getting married these last few days in San Francisco, it all makes me so happy for the joyful celebrants.
I am in the 32nd year of an opposite-sex marriage, and the idea that this same satisfaction might be offered to more people than have enjoyed it up to now is immensely appealing to me. As for family values, what more compelling moment can there be than to see two people want to make a public declaration of commitment to one another? I am inclined toward the view that this just might be, after all, a stablizing and positive force for society.

What's your ad?
Today I downloaded and installed the new browser NetCaptor, opting for now for the free version that has a row of text ads just above the browser window. It's a nifty tabbed browser with lots of coolish features, but what I have found myself enjoying today is seeing what ads are served with what content, using some sort of algorithm that reads text from the served page and then chooses ads that "match." Try it!
