Blackberry Pickin'
When Susan and I dropped around the old Boldt paper mill this afternoon so that I could photogrpah the stack in afternoon light, she alertly noticed a few blackberry vines making a proud stand around the steps of one of the abandoned buildings. We picked a couple of cups of berries in quick order, and, inspired, dropped by the drug store to get a couple of plastic pails and then headed out to a berry patch we know in the country.
We were well rewarded for the trip. It's rained here the last few days, and the berries were plump and ripe. We had to force ourselves to quit picking, acknowledging that once your pail has reached a certain point, you're moving forward on pure obsession.
When I got home, I pulled out the largest Pyrex roaster I had and filled it with berries (and still have some left for tomorrow morning's cereal!). It took a triple recipe of the shortbread to fill out the cobbler. It's out of the oven and cooling now, for us to bring to a friend's house around the corner. Wish you could be there to have some with us!

New Harmony
My friend Steve Leenhouts, who is living in election-crazed Indonesia, emailed me this photo he took of a print shop advertising board, with its frank offer for voter-related services:
Steve, amongst his other traits, is a devotee of the famed Protestant theologian Paul Tillich, so I replied with this photo taken Wednesday evening of Tillich's grave marker in New Harmony, IN:
New Harmony is one of my favorite places in the world, and I try to get there as often as is reasonable. I hadn't been for about five or six years, the longest I had been away since my first visit there a decade and a half ago, and I was comforted to find that all the magic and charm of the place was still intact.
New Harmony is the locale of two nineteenth century utopian communities, and, I would argue, a third and longest-lasting utopia in its recent decades, with its focus on its spiritual and intellectual past that also encompasses spiritual and intellectual activities of the modern day. Tillich was enamored of the place, and eventually was laid to rest in the tiny enchanted park that bears his name.

See you sooner, aggregator
I have been toying around with my own personal feed aggregator (note that I'm still tinkering with it, so if you follow the link, you might be prepared for the unexpected!).
The idea is not to create a new competitor to Bloglines and its ilk, but to learn more about parsing XML, handling feeds, etc. On the other hand, I like having the quick, tight personalized feed aggregator and find I'm reading from it quite a bit.

Gimme that golf!
I slipped away from productive work until mid-afternoon today, to attend the first round play at the Louisiana Open. Since I was there in the heart of the workday -- that it, when honest, hardworking people were at their jobs and so the galleries weren't crowded -- I got to prowl around and see several of the groups of golfers. I was lucky enough to see more than one moment when a golfer birdied his way into the lead, and saw a half-dozen holes of solid play from Guy Boros, who as I write this is the leader at -7, although that could change as the afternoon play goes forward. You can check the progress at the truly impressive web-based leaderboard.
I also saw quite a bit of this moment's second-place -6 Rafael Gomez, who managed to help himself by consistently leaving himself with 6 to 15 foot putts for birdie; and watched several sweet birdie putts from Charley Hoffman.
I love this event, and try to get out to see some of it each year, especially those early rounds.
