Home Again
Susan and I have just returned from about three and a half weeks of road travel, which though it included Thanksgiving, I did not treat as vacation, and so kept up with work from the road on my lap top. Some thoughts:
1. The dial-up ghetto is real hell for anyone trying to do any kind of work. Several of the places we stayed had only dial-up available. Oh, the suffering.
2. On the other hand, I spent two of the days at a conference in New Orleans, in the charmingly ancient old Le Richelieu, which barely has phones much less broadband, and all was saved by the internet cafe on the next corner. Including good latte!
 3. I got to meet Carly Steyer. Perhaps one day you will get to meet her, too!
4. When we go to places like New York, we almost always fly, and having a car there was a kick. It meant that we (a) would roll past gigantic outlet malls, and (b) have space for things like the huge Creuset pots we bought. It also meant that I could cruise the excellent garbage tossed out by space-challenged Manhattanites. I got a new (slightly used) ironing board cover from a neighborhood laundromat. I skipped the ironing board itself.

Ritzy Food for the Gods
My friend Steve Leenhouts, who is living in Indonesia, writes:
Dear James,
Herewith I offer for your web site two photos of an odd subject that may be of interest to you and others.

These photos were taken in Bali, the famous resort island of Indonesia, located, by the way, just down the island chain from Flores, the site of the recent discovery of the 'little people'.
The Balinese prepare many daily offerings to various gods, but particularly to the God of the Mountain and the God of the Sea. They consider themselves caught in the middle between these two forces, and the gods must be balanced with offerings.
You can see that the offering contains the traditional elements: candle, flower petals, incense, rice and coconut. But a closer inspection in the second image reveals that the gods have evolved with new contemporary tastes! A Ritz cracker and a wrapped candy round off the meal for these latter day mod-gods.

I will be sure to send appropriate photo documentary evidence when Big Mac's start appearing in the offering baskets!

Today really is a case of Thank God Its Friday for me. I have been working relentlessly to finish up some big projects and in the last few days I have finally got to feeling caught up. More baseball
As I write this, the Red Sox, who were the first team in history to win a best of seven series after losing the first three games to the Yankees in the ALCS, are now themselves up 3-0. If they become the only team to have come from behind 0-3 and then to lose four in a row in the World Series, that really would be a curse. Undeniably. I would have to re-examine all my beliefs in the supernatural and the powers of vengeful ghosts.

Astros...
Just in case you are wondering, I am finding that being a fan of the Houston Astros, tied with the St. Louis Cardinals 2-2 in the NLCS at this writing, is quite nerve-wracking. I was eight years old when the Astros (who started life as the Colt 45s) fired up their first season in Houston, displacing the Cardinals (for whom Harry Carey was then announcing the games, with Joe Garagiola, on KMOX) as the nearest baseball team and therefore that team deserving of my loyalty. Oh, the twists and turns of fate, as we wait...
