What a delightful book
How much will my memory start to erode in my declining years? Lots of folks my age (mid 50s) are wondering this right now, which is at least partially reponsible for the upsurge in crossword puzzles, sudoku, etc. Is there any silver lining to this cloud? Will I be able in the next decade to pick up a wonderful book like Kafka on the Shore and remember so little aobut it that it's like reading it for the first time, again? I suppose it's already happening in that I now am occasionally re-reading older whodunnits without the faintest worry that I will remember the murderer, or even the characters, from the first time around. This should be taken, I suppose, as a benefit of aging.

PickItMaster.com
I've been playing guitar quite a bit more lately, and even bought a new guitar a couple of weeks ago. As a result, I've been surfing the Internet for guitar-related sites, and have found quite a bit that is useful - in fact, it's almost a problem to keep things winnowed down to what is useful and worth returning to.
To impose some order on all this, I've created a new little web site called PickItMaster.com. Have a look, and note that there is a blank on the site for suggesting additions.

At your server
For some time I have curiously eyed the media devices that work to stream content from your computer collection of songs, conveniently to the home stereo system, but none of them seemed quite right until I read David Pogue's New York Times story about the Slim Devices Squeezebox 3. As the company site and the Pogue article explain, this device not only provides a good sound quality for playing your mp3s over your home entertainment center, it also tunes into scads of internet radio stations from all over the world; and because its inner workings are open source, there are lots of patches and plugins available for such things as listening to your XM Radio account, etc. There are even RSS feed displays on the beautiful, crisp display, and ambient sounds like thunderstorms, etc.
Mine came yesterday, and within a short while I had it up and running and pumping beautiful sound into the den. You may have to do a little tweaking to get the server working through your firewall in you have one, but there are clear instructions with the unit for those not so familiar with these issues.
I am very pleased with this unit. Highly recommended.

What's yours?
We just returned from the annual conference of the Association of Performing Arts Presenters, an organization for folks that do what PASA does, that is, present concerts, performances, etc. Like most trade group conferences, there are professional development sessions, a trade show floor, etc., and like most arts conferences, there are showcases of performers, both at the conference hotel and sprinkled throughout the city.
We saw, as usual, dozens of performances, some outtakes and some full length. Jackie Lyle and I have been attending this conference almost every year since 1989, and she observed upon our return at midweek that so much of what we saw reflected the sense that everybody had to have a "gimmick." Opera companies that had rock synth, dancers that all fly around in the air or bounce on balls, classical musicians that sort of play jazz, jazz musicians that reflect classical training, etc. Is this a reflection of the shorter attention span of our time? A phase of the moment? An indicator that culture as we know it is being shucked aside? Or did we just go to the wrong stuff? (Or did we only go to stuff that had the gimmick to attract us?)
