Frost flowers
Verbesina virginica, sometimes called frostweed, is one of a few plants that makes these unusual "frost flowers" or "ice flowers" on cold winter mornings. Freezing water splits the stems and unfrozen water from below continues to be drawn up and extruded through the split to freeze instantly in the winter air, building these delicate, beautiful and ephemeral structures. These were found near Delacroix, LA.

Stronger With Each Other
I will be having a photo exhibit at the Iberia Parish Library April 15 - May 12, 2009, with an artist reception on Wednesday, April 15 from 6 pm to 8 pm, at the Main Library in New Iberia, 445 E. Main St. There will be about 70-80 prints from digital photographs taken in various places around the U.S. and Canada, all taken this decade. Here is a look at the promotional poster for the exhibit (and you can also download this as a PDF by clicking here).
Most of the photos in the exhibit are found here on Poor Clio; here is the one used on the poster.
As we created prints, mounted them, arranged them, etc. for the exhibit, I was amazed at how different it was to see them as physical objects as opposed to only as digital renderings on a computer screen. I had forgotten how much I like... pictures.
Hope to see you at the opening, you're invited!

Linguistic facts
Just as Latin originated with Rome, Pig Latin originated with Pig Rome, or, as it is more formally known, Ome-ray. The Roman Empire achieved more fame than the Pig Roman Empire, and Latin may figure more in impact on modern languages, but porcine classicists would point out that within certain age groups, Pig Latin yet today maintains a strong presence; in fact, Pig Latin speakers outnumber Latin speakers amongst 11 year-olds by some several hundred thousand to one. Latin is also, of course, the language of law and the church. While there are Catholic masses still said in Latin (and, recently, increasingly so), there are very few examples of priests who celebrate the mass in Pig Latin.

Zydeco! World Premiere
World Premiere of choreographer Elisa Monte's Zydeco!, commissioned by Performing Arts Society of Acadiana (PASA), and presented for the first time at Heymann Performing Arts Center in Lafayette, LA, on Oct. 11, 2008. The piece was performed by the Elisa Monte Dance Company, and featured projected images as well as live music by Jeffery Broussard and the Creole Cowboys (in the orchestra pit, and seen here in the foreground), to a score by Jonno Frishberg.

Stormy Weather
Gustav has just left. Ike threatens. What's not to like?
12 not-so-bad things about having back-to-back hurricanes:
1. You won't lose much in the way of frozen food, since you just threw out all the things that rotted in your freezer a couple of days ago.
2. This time, you won't have to worry about that big limb that just fell on your patio.
3. Really, the refrigerator hasn't looked this clean in years, and it looks like it will stay that way for longer than you thought.
4. Now that you finally found all the flashlights and candles, you'll be able to use them some more.
5. All those batteries you were lugging in from the store when your electicity came back on are now suddenly useful again!
6. You have even more time to re-schedule all the meetings that were set for last week and this week.
7. You might actually get to eat that second can of corned beef hash which you would never, never eat in any other conditions.
8. All those people you just did favors for know it's their turn.
9. You will get to use every last one of the t-shirts you saved for dirty tasks like yard cleanup.
10. It's a crisis! It is OKAY to eat potato sticks right from the can!
11. The awning is already down.
12. No use putting yourself out cleaning up that last corner of the yard... yet!

Putting the gust in Gustav
We are with power, etc. after the passage of Hurricane Gustav, although just across the street our neighbors have been without electricity for four days. We are doing laundry for, delivering ice to and serving an occasional meal for a few that we know still without juice. But, all in all, we are just fine and things are getting back to normal. I have not included any photos because they would look just like the ones I posted for Hurricane Lili six years ago. You know, some downed limbs, a dramatic shot or two from the most unfortunate of tree falls, something about the power being out, and then something about things being more back to normal. The ones from 2002 can serve just as well.

Gustav
For the first time ever, I have left home during a hurricane. There is a mandatory evacuation order in Iberia Parish where I live, so we went 20 miles inland to Lafayette to stay with friends. As I write, Gustav has just come ashore near Cocodrie, LA. It should move right over New Iberia, but as a much weaker storm than many we have endured. We're hoping to return to only the usual post-storm cleanup of downed limbs, etc.

The Poor Clio Time Machine
I'm taking a class in May on Adobe AIR for Flex Developers, so I've been trying to build up my chops enough in Flex 3 to make the class productive. Slogging through tutorials is always instructive, but I find I really pick up my learning pace when I try to actually create something and then have to learn all the things it takes to flesh out my idea.
So, I have created the Poor Clio Time Machine, which lets the user find a spot in the historical continuum of Poor Clio postings and see what was posted on that day; to make it more visually interesting, I have also allowed users to limit the results to photo entries. One major caveat: the older a posting is, the more vulnerable it is to any linked pages long ago having disappeared. This is especially true, as you might guess, for news citations.

Tiny companion
The other day I purchased, through Amazon, one of those tiny little Asus EEEPC 2G Surf computers. It is very light and tiny, about the size and weight of a trade paperback, but its 7-inch 800x400 monitor is very readable, and, since I have somewhat small hands, I find the small keyboard very much usable.
Out of the box, it is very easy to hook up to Wi-Fi or ethernet for Internet; and to read, edit and create Word and Excel documents in Open Office, etc.
However, for my purposes, there were a few things I needed to be able to make it do in order for it to qualify as a real traveling companion in the place of my Toshiba Windows laptop. I need to be able to not only read email, etc., but also do simple web page editing for maintenance purposes, and also want to be able to use my Sprint EVDO connection. Here's what I added (or found!) to make it all work:
1. I quickly found a link that described how to use the Sprint U720, and after about a fifteen-minute process, had the Sprint device working. I simply call it up through a terminal.
2. There is a need to do some photo editing on occasion when I am on the road, usually only cropping and resizing, but still, best done in a real photo editor. From the WIKI at eeeuser.com, I found a list of repositories for packages that work with the debian - xandros branch of Linux, and had GIMP, the versatile open-source graphics editor, working within minutes (note that I had to use "apt-get install" rather than the somewhat squirrelly Synaptic package handler.. but then, I kind of like command lines).
3. These repositories also included a package for the MySQL Query Browser, which allows me to manipulate databases as needed in the rare case where I am faced with a task that I can't address with the CMS I have built for one of my web sites.
4. A line editor was on my list of things to hunt for, but the kwrite that comes installed on the EEEPC (1) can be made to show line numbers and (2) can be made to highlight ColdFusion markup. It is a very rare occasion indeed that I would have to edit ColdFusion code in my serious "on the road" mode - usually page code is written and tested on the dev box before being loaded on the production server - but it is good to know that it would be easy to read the pages should I need to be able to. (In an "emergency," I suppose a page can be tested on my own server or under a temp name, etc., but I think I have had to do this perhaps once in the last four or five years... almost all the adjusting I do in "road mode" is to content.)
5. Similarly, an FTP client was on my list, but I read that the File Manager on the EEEPC was based on Konqueror, and it turns out that you can open an ftp window through the address bar. I will need another solution, though, for Secure FTP.
All in all, I am pleased to say that my $300 EEEPC will be the computer I take the next time I fly out for a few days. For longer road trips, I would still lug the now-luxuriously-large-seeming Toshiba, or, since space wouldn't be at such a premium, take them both along!
