Pittsburgh's huge old Mellon Bank is officially leaving the retail side fo the business, selling off its consumer activities to a Scottish bank.

Wouldn't it be fun?

Similarly, seat belts are letting people live too long...

We saw Legally Blonde Saturday, and it was just fine. We went with a family group that spanned three generations, and it was fairly well liked by all. Not profound. Just fun.

Maddy...

...and Clara
Susan and I went for a drive this afternoon to the place where our friends Maddy and Clara go to ride horses. I was reminded so much of the time when I was a kid; my sister Elizabeth had a horse, sometimes kept at a stable and then, later, in the chicken pasture that happened to be in our neighborhood, so we could ride from the back yard and through the neighborhood. Our horse, Lady, would snatch a fudgesicle right off the stick... small price to pay for her company!

Like Sheila (to whom I'm grateful for this link!), I found more bird noises than bird visuals at the Puffin video page. In fact, I saw some sandaled feet and heard smatterings of conversation from the human variety of bipeds. But still, worth a visit.

We went crabbing at Rockefeller Refuge, on the southwest Louisiana coast, the other day, and brought home a few dozen crabs to boil up and have for dinner. I love the company that the boat-tailed grackles provide to crabbers. I've put together a few picture from the expedition on a photo page, leading with birds that might be of interest to some, and also including some other shots that may be of interest to angling sociologists.

Susan spotted this beautiful Golden-Silk Spider (nephila clavipes) just now in our back yard. We figure this new pal will take out a lot of mosquitoes!

This is so, so sad; if I were in the line of work where I had a sermon to write for Sunday, I'd find it hard to resist this as the topic.
