I am having surgery in the morning to remove a bone spur from my left shoulder, so when I next post to Poor Clio may be largely a function of when the demerol haze wears off... |

Today I was treated to a tour of the new chapel just built at the Episcopal School of Acadiana, a prep school a few miles from me. The room is nicely fenestrated so as to take advantage of the lovely old oaks on the campus, but my favorite sensitive-to-the-local-natural-environment touch was the inclusion of an armadillo at the feet of St. Francis. |

What a glorious day this is, for an article about geckos in the Dallas News settles a long-standing debate between Susan and me about why we're seeing so many more of these curious lizards. She had contended that the ones we were seeing were escapees from pet purchases; I had thought that they were just expanding their range. I must admit, though, that I was only partially right; I had attributed the expansion of their territory to our recent drought years, but rather than relying on aberrant clouds of dust they have come on trucks and trains and ships and such. |

Had a nice e-mail exchange with John over at Austinspace, my webloggers neighbor of the moment, about my pseudo- panorama of Enron Field. He has done quite a few nice pans, himself, of ballparks and other scenes. In the course of our communication, I let him know about the success I have been having with lithium batteries, which are a drink in the desert for digital camera users. I wish I could tell you how much longer they last than regular alkalines, but since the pair I put in the camera in Tuscon in September are still working, I don't know what it takes to finally drain them. Remarkable, truly remarkable. |

When we went to Houston last weekend, we slid down from I-10 to take the coastal road for a while, crossing by toll ferry at Cameron, complete with such maritime appointments as seagulls. |

Had my first visit to the Houston Astros' new Enron Field yesterday ('Stros won a good squeaker, 4-3, on Wade Miller's 13-strikeout pitching and some timely hitting, including a homer by Jeff Bagwell and an eighth-inning tie-breaker sac fly by Richard Hidalgo). It was an ideal double-header day for me. Prior to the ball game, I went to the Houston Grand Opera's Don Carlo, with homeruns by Samuel Ramey, Patricia Racette, Ramon Vargas, Béatrice Uria-Monzon, and a pinch-hit clout by Peter Coleman-Wright, stepping to the plate for the injured Dwayne Croft. |

When a quartet of us wound up getting together for lunch today at Cafe Des Amis in Breaux Bridge, about 25 miles away, Susan somehow managed to ride both ways in our friend Randy Fertel's new BMW Z-8 roadster. Top down, perfect weather, hair-a-flyin'. Perhaps you'll agree that it seems to suit her... |

Our friend Steve Marcel sent me this picture that he took last night
of a gas well fire a couple of miles outside of New Iberia. His wife Kay told me that the traffic to the blowout site was something on the order of mall traffic at Christmas. |
