We're fresh back from New York this afternoon, where we spent about a week soaking up culture. Last night it
was Nabucco at the Met, where Maestro Levine did
something I've never experienced before; the shouts and applause were so fervent following "Va pensiero" that it was reprised before the
opera went on... I do have a recording of Nabucco from La Scala where that happens, but I have never seen it myself, in other productions of Nabucco I have attended. We also saw Die Zauberflote, which reminded me that even at his most jocular, Mozart's ensemble writing is divine. Two of the evenings we were there, we went to City Center for Paul Taylor Dance Company. If the fact that we're friends with Paul disallows my judgments, then skip the next few lines... it was extraordinary, beautiful dancing. The company has had some personnel turn over, but the new folk are as wonderful as those whose places they take. The new choreography was great, the old stuff was marvelous, including what might be my favorite Taylor piece, "Eventide," although to be favorite would mean I like it more than "Piazzolla Caldera," and it's hard to imagine liking anything more than I like that! Also of note, the costumes for the new piece "Dandelion Wine," by Santo Loquasto, are deliciously sherbet and bubble-gum like and seem to float off the dancers into the air. Sumptuous. |

| Today I worked on a project for an Internet client that proved to be interesting in a couple of unexpected ways. Southwest Performing Arts Presenters is a consortium of presenters in five states, and the by far greatest value of the group is the strong sense of sharing and support amongst colleagues. The group has been growing in recent years (it's about two and half times larger than it was, I think, about three years ago), and is getting more interestingly diverse as it gets bigger. To make it easy for members to get a sense of what their fellow member organizations are doing, I created a web Slide Show of all the members' own sites, in two versions, one for those with broadband, and a second, slower and more forgiving of load time version for those using dial-up. That was the first lesson... that the concept of digital divide can go beyond the separation of the haves and have-nots of access to the haves and have-nots of fast, persistent access. The second lesson that I learned is that it is senseless to depend on the idea that forty different servers are all going to work within the space of a half-hour. I found early on in the testing phase that I would have to build an error-rescue component for when people's browsers hung up on bad sites, down servers, etc. ... although the culprits would be all different an hour later. Computers almost work. |
